Instead of a classic four leg construction, this side table is standing on 15 legs. Therefor each leg can be thinner and support a delicate surface evenly. Based on the arrangement grid of the legs, modifications can be made which could lead to a bench, chaise or a lounge chair. Through a hidden x support structure, the legs are prevented from snapping off. The permanent connections are clued and made by stud welding. A delicate appearance is the goal.

This developable surfaces are then printed on paper, cut out and glued together. This paper model is then used to create a mould for casting in ceramic. By this process we establish a shortcut between digital and material skipping the time consuming prototype making.
As part of my graduation project “Computer Augmented Crafts” I developed an exemplary process of “Augmented Spot Welding” as shown at “Computer Augmented Crafts” on the bottom. The models are a few exemplary results of this process. All models are based on suggestions from the same algorithm, which is generating a coherent mesh out of strips and connection points. For the development of the scale model of seating furniture parameters to add 4 points out side of the mesh where made. By that a hint for the attachment of the legs could be generated. All models try to show the bridging of the computer generated shape and crafts. The goal was to develop a tool for designers to create like humans do (by hands) with the benefit of contemporary technology.

We shouldn’t be afraid of using technology to enhance traditional handiwork. Thus, to bring craftsmanship into the modern age, I designed a computer interface that actually makes suggestions to the designer while he’s working.

In my version, the computer follows a structure in the making via a webcam and instantly generates other design suggestions based on any special parameters programmed by the designer. It’s like having a colleague in your workshop, giving you direct feedback. The experimental prototype can recognise and respond to basic structures created on-camera by spot-welding thin strips of metal together. In due time, any technique might be linked to digital technology. The Computer Augmented Crafts program accomplishes two things. First, for the designer it can point out new ways of dealing with the design process. Second, it makes the most of modern technology without sacrificing the advantages of craftsmanship.

As part of The Iceland Project four international designers were staying in a remote place in eastern Iceland called Egilsstaðir. Team included a french, dutch, german and an icelandic. The plan was to work with local materials with local craftsmen and workshops to create a series of objects that communicate the local customs and heritage. Materials include, icelandic; wool, wood, bones, antlers, aluminium and reindeer leather. We were really keen on working with local craftsmen and workshops; felting, sand casting, wood cutting, joinery, sewing and bone sculpting. This variety gave us unique opportunity of mixing both materials and techniques.
